Color Psychiatry: How To Improve Your PowerPoint Making Skills

You may now know it, but color plays an important role in one’s thinking.

Colors have been scientifically proven to influence one’s mental health. Each shade contains properties that can impact your mood, behavior, and feelings. According to Psychologist  Jennifer Aaker, “Certain colors do broadly align with specific traits (e.g., brown with ruggedness, purple with sophistication, and red with excitement).” Given this knowledge, you can create better PowerPoint presentations to induce the thinking of your audience and get more favorable results! How?

Color Psychiatry

Much research shows that color psychology exists due to one’s personal experiences in the past. How each color affects us is deeply rooted in the things you see most often or even those of which are part of your culture. Not only does color influence one’s attitudes and perceptions but also it can even influence one’s consumerism

Besides being easily recognizable, some brands intentionally use their trademark colors to manipulate buyers into consuming their products. They do this to establish a sense of branding and to convey a certain impression which they want their consumers to have. Asides from this, brand innovators also use research tools to determine which colors would male or female buyers prefer, becoming a way to boost up their sales as well.

Personality Branding

Due to the many psychological studies on the impact of colors in marketing and advertising, it has become an effective way to raise sales and a reliable guide in helping people create better and more meaningful presentations.

Now, integrating the branding you want into your presentations isn’t hard at all. Once you know the kind of personality you want your target market to get from you, it will be an easy going forward!

To guide you, we’ve provided you with a list of some basic colors and keywords the public associates it with:

  • Red – sophistication, power, passion
  • Blue – trustworthy, calming, approachable
  • Yellow – optimism, vibrancy, clarity
  • Green – health, growth, wealth
  • Orange – cheerful, youthful, energetic
  • Purple – creativity, luxury, royalty
  • Black – simplicity or exclusivity
  • Pink – nurturing, flirty, feminine

According to psychologist Bernardo Tirado, PMP, “If blue is your favorite color you love harmony, are reliable, sensitive and always make an effort to think of others.  You like to keep things clean and tidy and feel that stability is the most important aspect of life.”

Given these colors and keywords, it will effectively give your presentation a touch of whichever approach you like! However, choosing colors for your presentation isn’t as easy as click and drag. Of course, when mixing and matching colors, you also have to take into consideration if they are pleasing to the eyes and if the colors look good together.

Color Matching

In digital presentations, it’s essential to create it in such a way that your audience will listen to you, wanting more. To help you with this, color matching is the key!

Some people have a hard time thinking of what colors to mix and match when making their presentations. “The most important thing to know about colors, and our emotional response to them, has to do with colors’ saturation and brightness,” says psychologist Sally Augustin Ph.D. Worry not because we have some app suggestions for you!

  • Palleton – with just a few clicks, you’ll know which colors match your first initial choice! You can never go wrong in experimenting with this!
  • ColorBlender – by sliding the buttons, the site will give you a pattern that matches with each other! No need to worry about the RGB codes as well!
  • Ginifah – by clicking on one color, all the other shades in the same color scheme will appear Pantone-style!
  • Coolors – unlike the others, Coolors is a random color generator where you can customize whether you’ll lock colors or randomize everything again. It’s perfect for those who want to play around with palettes!

Using these apps, you can give your presentations a personal touch of your own. However, be careful not to bombard your audience with the wrong shades! With just a little practice, you’ll be a presentation expert in no time!
